Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, like its neighbour, Haut-Brion, is located in Pessac, just southwest of the city of Bordeaux. From 1584 to 178 9 it belonged to monks of the Carmelite order. The Chantecaille family, Bordeaux négociants, bought the estate after the French revolution, and owns it to this day. The château was built in the early 19th century, and the gardens were designed at the same time by Fischer, the noted landscape architect. The cellars and vat room were completely renovated in 1987. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine is aged in oak for eighteen months. A second wine Clos des Carmes, first appeared in 1990.
